Newsletter – Dec. 2021- Part 1

Dear Milk Lake Community,

This is John and Jenna, the current caretakers for the Milk Lake Retreat Centre in Middlewood, Nova Scotia.  Thank you to everyone who was able to join us last month for our “Meet the Caretakers” event. In this, the first part of our two-part December Newsletter, we’ll describe how to book retreats and donate, and new cabin rates and discounts at Milk Lake! In part two, which we’ll send shortly, we’ll describe some projects accomplished since we arrived in May, along with upcoming projects.

Book Your Next Retreat Now and Consider a Donation!

We want to encourage everyone who has not already booked a retreat to check out the website’s cabin availability calendar and see the full details on how to book your stay.  If you book a retreat for 2022 this month, you will enjoy our present cabin rates, which will change January 1st. Please see details below so you may stay in your favorite cabin while enjoying the peace and quiet of nature.

We do need your support to keep Milk Lake flourishing. If you are interested in making a one time or monthly donation, please go to the Shambhala Canada donation webpage and make your contribution by putting “Milk Lake” in the comment section as shown below.  Thank you to everyone who has already set up a recurring monthly donation towards Milk Lake!

Be sure to click on the box for recurring donations if that is part of your intention.

Add a note in the comments box so your donation is directed to the correct fund.

If you have any problems in setting this up, we’d be happy to set this up on your behalf.  Contact us at [email protected] and we’ll happily follow up with you!

Cabin Rates & Discounts

We are doing our best to make sure Milk Lake will remain a dependable part of people’s lives and practice experience for years to come.  Everyone should be able to experience this wonderful property and not be burdened by finances when making the decision to go on retreat.  To guarantee Milk Lake’s future, we would like to offer this strategy:

  1. The current nightly rates of the cabins will be adjusted at the beginning of January 2022.  This is being implemented to keep Milk Lake afloat financially while attending to the needs of the property and land.

    • We will be changing the price per night to $60

      • with this change we are removing the heating costs of the wood stoves

      • in addition the electric baseboard heating will be reduced to $10 a day

    • If a retreat is longer than 10 days, the per night price of the cabins will be reduced to $50 a night.

  2. If you schedule a retreat before Jan.1.2022 then we would like to offer you the current cabin rates.  This means that if you were to book a retreat before the end of 2021, even if that retreat is in 2022, you’ll have the option to pay the current cabin and heating rates.

  3. We are aware that there are some people who would like to visit for a retreat but may not be able to afford it.  We want to be able to offer a discounted rate for those who may need financial aid, so everyone can continue to enjoy the beauty of Milk Lake.

In order to do this, we will need to increase the number of recurring monthly donations to cover the costs of these lower rates.  This discounted rate will be based on the amount of recurring monthly donations we have.  If Milk Lake’s monthly donations increase sufficiently, we will be able to accommodate reduced rates for those in need.

  1. Please also consider making a bequest to Milk Lake scholarships, as one retreatant recently did. You can find information on this at: https://shambhala.org/giving/leaving-a-bequest/

We need your help to keep our rates and costs low and allow us to offer discounted rates and continue Milk Lake into the far future!  We are accepting donations and it is very simple and easy to do. Please refer to the previous instruction (above) on how to donate or contact us at [email protected].

We hope that you all have a wonderful Winter and we hope to see you for your next retreat.

Stay tuned for Part Two of Milk Lake’s December Newsletter!
